The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) ****

All in all The Lincoln Lawyer is an enjoyable film, a film that could have been much more, but despite not living to its potential, still scores high.

Millions (2004, UK) *****

Millions faithfully aims right at the heart – emotionally and otherwise, but so doing without much melodrama and preaching. It is not a children film nor a Christian fable but rather a direct, even if seemingly naive, examination of the way we justify our actions, respect others and struggle, mostly with little success, to maintain what we believe are our core values.

Barney's Version (2010, Canada) ****

Barney’s Version is a mixed blessing. The film enjoys a decorated cast, including names such as Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman and Minnie Driver. It has a mostly solid storyline, yet, feels often as a long novel compacted into a tiring 132 minutes.

True Grit (2010) *****

True Grit is a true instant Western Classic. Part of the beauty of True Grit is in how simple the story is – a girl on a mission to avenge her father’s death. Without discounting the original novel’s writing, the film’s mastery is in its screen delivery, which makes it a gem.

Inspector Bellamy (2009) ***

Chabrol created a character that has a seemingly complex life, with a brother that appears his evil alter ego, a wife he loves monogamously or maybe just have an obsession with her breasts, and a life that feel purposeless. The plot gets resolved very quickly and is quite corny.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Sweden 2009, USA 2010) ***

Less engaging than the first film but an improvement over the second one, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, delivers several intense scenes. Exceptionally played by Noomi Rapace as the title character Lisbeth, with good supporting performances by several characters, including a late new comer to the film series Annika Hallin in the role of Lisbeth’s attorney, the 2.5 hours long film seems to aim at satisfying the audience rather than deliver deeper layers.
