Game Night (2018) ****

Game Night (2018) ****

Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, to a screenplay by Mark Perez, Game Night is a comedy-action thriller, that delivers jokes while taking the audience on a wild ride. The plot, in a nutshell and without any spoilers, follows a group of friends, in the habit of meeting for a competitive yet friendly evening of games, until one evening the stakes are raised a few notches; someone’s life are on the line.

American Made (2017) ****

American Made (2017) ****

Life is stranger than fiction; this paraphrase of a Mark Twain’s famous quote may come in mind, when watching American Made. It is a film based on true events, albeit the large creative freedom the filmmakers took in its making. Directed by Doug Liman to a screenplay by Gary Spinelli, American Made tells the story of Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot who turned a drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel during the 1980s. Cutting a deal with the DEA to avoid prolong jail time, Seal ends up an informant.

The Sting (1973) *****

The Sting (1973) *****

The Sting is among the best, if not the best, con-artists’ films ever made. It was directed by George Roy Hill to a screenplay written by David S. Ward. The story itself, though fictional, was inspired by David Maurer’s book The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man. In the book, which details stories of various grifters, The Sting is based on the real-life cons carried out by the Gondorff brothers, Fred and Charley.
If you have never seen it, or it had been a while since you did, check it out. The Sting is available for streaming on Netflix.

Come Hell or High Water (2016) ***

Come Hell or High Water (2016) ***

Directed by David Mackenzie to a screenplay by Taylor Sheridan, Come Hell or High Water is a Western-style crime action thriller, with an undertone of social commentary related to the 2008 recession. Come Hell or High Water is not a bad film, but I am afraid it is not the hype some critics made it to be. I did like that this film used the recession as the backdrop for the plot, and it handles it in its own very original manner.

The Nice Guys (2016) ***

The Nice Guys (2016) ***

The Nice Guys is a film that could have been done much better, but at least Crowe and Gosling elevate it to a more than tolerable level. Despite the many laughs, The Nice Guys is highly uneven on multiple levels. On the upside, The Nice Guys revives the odd couple / forced-to-be-buddies genre, bringing to mind films such as Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold, and Lethal Weapon with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

Mr. Holmes (****) 2015

Mr. Holmes (****) 2015

Based on Mitch Cullin's 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, Mr. Holmes is not your typical crime-mystery. The film, which was directed by Bill Condon and adapted to the screen by Jeffrey Hatcher, is more of a psychological exploration of a decaying mind. Through revelations of regrets and insights, the protagonist, an aging Sherlock Holmes, can finally find his redemption.
