This Is the End (2013) ***

This Is the End (2013) ***

This comedy-horror film, written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, has some very funny moments. But what starts as a fresh comedy quickly becomes redundant and somewhat tiring. Bottom line: if you've enjoyed Pineapple Express, Superbad and the likes, you may enjoy This Is the End. Otherwise, find something else to watch.

Warm Bodies (2013) ***

Warm Bodies (2013) ***

At its heart Warm Bodies is a romantic comedy with a twist. It uses the zombie genre as a backdrop for the plot, which makes it compelling even for non-zombie fans such as myself. The story includes some noble elements such as accepting the different, social responsibility, and, being a romance, of course, love as the ultimate cure. Nicholas Hoult is excellent in the leading role, enjoying good support by Teresa Palmer and Rob Corddry.

ParaNorman (2012) ****

ParaNorman, a hybrid of animation, zombie-horror and comedy, has its heart in the right place, even if its outcast theme is nothing new.

Prometheus (2012) ***

Prometheus, a Ridley Scott film, is a could-have-been that never quite delivers. It starts off with very primal intriguing questions (why are we here? who created us? for what purpose?) and then veers off into yet another Alien variation.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012) ****

This film has all the traits of an immediate classic. It is smarter for its genre, and strikes a good balance between horror, humor, parody, myth, and, yes, even little sprouts of intelligence...

The Woman in Black (UK, 2012) ***

This horror-thriller film, directed by James Watkins and written by Jane Goldman (based on Susan Hill's novel of the same name,) could have been much better if it would have focused on the psychological rather than be yet another genre horror flick.
