Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016, New Zealand) *****

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016, New Zealand) *****

Spiced with plenty of humor and lots of heart, Hunt for the Wilderpeople helped restore some of my faith, that the art of storytelling via film is not yet all but lost. Two people, one a troubled city kid (Julian Dennison) who had been moved from one foster home to another, the other a wilder grieving man (Sam Neill), find themselves running together from the law, and subject to a national manhunt. These two outcasts who cannot stand each other, not so surprisingly, would learn to enjoy each other’s company. And while this outcome is somewhat predictable as it is desired, it is the road they take them there, that makes their journey worth seeing.

Wild (2014) ****

Wild (2014) ****

Wild is a biopic road movie, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, to a screenplay by Nick Hornby. It is based on Cheryl Strayed's 2012 memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. Wild does a good job navigating through murky waters, applying filmmaking techniques that do justice to both the story and the people who brought this tale to the big screen.

Bears (2014) *** (k: *****)

Bears (2014) *** (k: *****)

Bears is a nature documentary, directed by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey, and narrated by John C. Reilly. Soft around the edges, Bears avoids gruesome scenes that typically accompany movies about wildlife. The filmmakers manage to put together a decent narrated plot, following a family of grizzly bears – a mom and two young cubs, as they venture from their hibernation home onto an Alaskan spring, summer and fall.

All Is Lost (2013) *****

All Is Lost (2013) *****

All Is Lost, a wilderness survival film, written and directed by J. C. Chandor, is highly engaging. It is no small feat given that the story takes place within the very limited spaces of a tiny yacht and an even smaller lifeboat. Furthermore, the film features only one cast member (Robert Redford,) and hardly uses any dialogue – so few words that they can be scribbled over a napkin. All of this makes All Is Lost quite a cinematic achievement. It is a testament to the talent of primarily two people: writer/director Chandor and actor Redford.

127 Hours (2010) ****

A perfect 4 star this film is not, but closer to 4 than 3 stars it is. 127 Hours is a worthy film, superbly acted and capably directed, featuring a story that will resonate with you long after you leave the theater.
