Spiritual

Of Gods and Men (2010, France) ***

This is a good true and quite terrifying story made into a film, a film most critics feel compelled to praise, but that, in all honesty, is quite long and tiring to watch.

The Adjustment Bureau (2011) ***

The Adjustment Bureau, written and directed by George Nolfi and staring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, is a noble attempt that, unfortunately, is not as mature conceptually as it seemed intended of being.

Enlighten Up! (2008) ***

Enlighten Up!’s failure is its ultimate success. While documentary filmmaker Kate Churchill’s hypothesis is that yoga can transform just about anyone, she fails to recognize that the effects of the transformation will vary from one person to another.

Millions (2004, UK) *****

Millions faithfully aims right at the heart – emotionally and otherwise, but so doing without much melodrama and preaching. It is not a children film nor a Christian fable but rather a direct, even if seemingly naive, examination of the way we justify our actions, respect others and struggle, mostly with little success, to maintain what we believe are our core values.

Groundhog Day (1993) *****

A delightful romantic comedy at its surface, Groundhog Day is one of these rare movies that allows different audiences to enjoy the film on various levels of depth and perspective. Ultimately Groundhog Day is a fun film with a serious message, that director Harold Ramis manages to serve without overburdening its lightness.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003, South Korea) *****

Tacking a challenge of presenting portions of Buddhist view of life on film, without making it preachy, over-talkative or otherwise pretentious, filmmaker Kim Ki-duk elects using visuals to tell much of the story. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring is a rich, mystical, serene, somber at times, mischievous at other times, wonderful film, well-worth repeated viewing.
