Birdman (2014) ****

Birdman (2014) ****

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is a semi-surreal drama-comedy, produced and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. The story follows Riggan Thomson (masterfully played by Keaton,) a movie actor made famous for staring as a superhero in a series of films called Birdman. Years later, with his glory all but faded, Riggan attempts a comeback via a Broadway adaptation of a Raymond Carver story.
Birdman, with its complex layers, surreal atmosphere and anxious pace, is not a film for everyone. Yet those who will take to the story will enjoy the film long after the end credits roll by.

The Skeleton Twins (2014) ***

The Skeleton Twins (2014) ***

Part observation, part commentary, The Skeleton Twins follows that dysfunctional unit we like to call a family. More particularly, the film highlights a bond between two sibling who drifted apart years before, and suddenly find themselves together again.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (2013, Sweden) ****

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (2013, Sweden) ****

Think of this film as a Swedish adaptation of Forrest Gump. Here too we have a protagonist whose life-story spans events and generations, putting him in front of world leaders, scientists and rebels. I enjoyed it and recommend if you are looking for something zany and are overly critical.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) ****

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) ****

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a charming, fast-pace story, whose protagonist is a revered concierge named Monsieur Gustave H. With its white and pink decor, The Grand Budapest Hotel itself looks much like a tall fancy wedding cake, structures with layers over layers of, well, nothing of real substance, thus becoming a set metaphor for the story.

Her (2013) ****

Her (2013) ****

Her, a comedy-drama written, directed and produced by Spike Jonze, feels both futuristic and current. It is at the same time depressing and inspiring, original yet familiar.
Her covers topics such as examination of human relationships, and our growing affair with our computers and mobile devices. It also hints at the current state of human mental evolution, which includes our still limited capacity to fully love.

Don Jon (2013) ***

Don Jon (2013) ***

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's writing-directing debut, Don Jon, can be classified as a new genre: pornomedy... Though truth be told, it's not really porn but rather a sort of a commentary using porn as a, hmmm... shall we say means to an end?
