X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) ****

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) ****

Making for a fun afternoon at the movies, X-Men: Days of Future Past is engaging and, for the most part is well-paced. It occasionally borderlines with some good philosophical points, the ones you may expect Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard to ask: can we really change the future? The classic conundrum of destiny versus choice.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) ***

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) ***

The second installment in Marvel Comics Captain America's superhero franchise is violent, wickedly silly, and very predictable. What this film lacks in plot twists and subtlety it makes plenty in engaging action scenes, well-executed special effects, and witty comic-relief lines.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) ****

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) ****

The second installment to Peter Jackson's J. R. R. Tolkien The Hobbit, is both engaging yet dissatisfying. The film itself is highly crafted in terms of visuals and effects; it is a pleasure to watch. The plot moves smoothly and is somewhat better paced than the first part. Yet, unlike other trilogies, such as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Hunger Games, we are left with pretty much no fulfilling conclusion at the end of this chapter.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) ****

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) ****

The second installment to The Hunger Games series proves to be a great improvement over the first part; the plot is tighter, the direction smoother, and the overall feel is of deeper purpose, both emotionally and socio-politically. The novel itself is still deeper and much more detailed, but all things considered, this is an excellent adaptation and one well worth seeing on the silver screen.

Thor: The Dark World (2013) ***

Thor: The Dark World (2013) ***

As far as Comics based films go, Thor: The Dark World is of mythological proportions; it is at once both grandeur and familiar, well-paced yet lacking in coherence. The film does a good job in balancing humor with action, silliness with romance, all the while struggling to keep a half-decent plotline. Yet, it is engaging and lots of fun. Look not for logic and you will be highly entertained.

Captain Phillips (2013) ****

Captain Phillips (2013) ****

Captain Phillips, the film, focuses on Captain Richard Phillips, whose cargo ship, the Maersk Alabama, was hijacked in 2009 off the Somali coast by local pirates. Phillips ends up being taken off the ship as a hostage, his captures hoping to negotiate his release in return for ransom money. It is well-paced, smooth and entertaining in a nerve-wracking sort of way.
