Drama

On a Clear Day (2005, UK) ***

On a Clear Day is a well-intended film about a laid off shipyard engineer, who carries for years the weight of a dead son and an estrangement to his other son, deciding to cross the English Channel. Though well acted, the film is awfully predictable. It is not boring but not that exciting either. Rather than leaving you with a sense of achievement and resolve, you are left asking – do I really care?

Children of Men (2006) *****

Children of Men, loosely adapted from a 1992 P. D. James novel of the same name, has a lot of elements going against it: it mixes way too many genres and subject matters into a plot that is highly inconceivable, for a setup that is not that far away into our own world’s future... Yet, almost magically, a very talented Alfonso Cuarón, who co-wrote and directed this memorable movie, makes it work.

Secretariat (2010) ***

It is, no doubt, challenging to take a story who’s end is known in advance, and tell it in a manner that will still be engaging. Some moments in the film are powerful and effective, yet the film drags for a good 30 minutes longer than it should, and loses focus in the process. Rated at 4.5 stars by my kids who enjoyed it, it’s a close 4 on my scale, but not close enough...

The Social Network (2010) ****

Would ‘The Social Network’ (film) be as interesting and attention-grabbing if it was not associated with Facebook? If indeed, it’s all fiction why associate it with the currently most popular web site? (aside, of course, from a legitimate concern for a liability lawsuit). Surely a capable team of filmmakers such as David Fincher, the director, and Aaron Sorkin, the writer, do not need to ride on someone else’s success.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010) ***

Luckily for mainstream animation studios, children are so easy to please... Not same is the luck of their parents, who need to sit through films that are, more often than not, mediocre, to say the least... In short: great, even exceptional animation, mediocre script and direction. Your kids will love it, and you can expect another installment in the foreseeable future as the original series included three books.

Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002, Australia) ***

Rabbit-Proof Fence may not be a solid piece in terms of film-making, nor an accurate account of history, but it is a movie worth seeing all the same in the hope we can all learn something from the past.
