Before Midnight (2013) ***

Before Midnight proves that not all wines get better with age. The third installment in Richard Linklater's romantic-drama Before series, lost much of its charm and authenticity. I should mention that I seem to be in a minority; most film critics loved this movie. It does have some nice moments but these are so crowded with fluff that their charm gets quickly lost in the noise. I came with expectations and left disappointed.

A Hijacking (Denmark, 2012) *****

A Hijacking is a psychological thriller portraying the breakdown of both an A type and a B type personalities under challenging circumstances, leaving scars that will never heal. It is a very well-made chilling film, that takes place worlds away from the universe of Captain Jack Sparrow.

This Is the End (2013) ***

This comedy-horror film, written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, has some very funny moments. But what starts as a fresh comedy quickly becomes redundant and somewhat tiring. Bottom line: if you've enjoyed Pineapple Express, Superbad and the likes, you may enjoy This Is the End. Otherwise, find something else to watch.

Fast & Furious 6 (2013) **

It is tempting to compare the sixth installment of this now established franchise to a porn movie. Not that any of us have ever seen one, but from what I hear, most porn films have very little in the way of plot and dialogue – these are just deemed a necessity to connect the scenes most men, and some women, watch the film for.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) ***

In its twelfth installment for the big screen franchise, and a sequel to the excellent 2009 J. J. Abrams' Star Trek film, Star Trek Into Darkness fails in originality and inspiration. Its plot suffers from illogical black holes and clichés. But what Star Trek Into Darkness lacks in the above, it makes up in fun comic dialogues and good character chemistry.

Mud (2013) ****

Set to the backdrop of crime, and being an engaging thriller, Mud is first and foremost a coming-of-age story about a boy trying to come into terms with what love is. Jeff Nichols who wrote and directed this film, manages to intertwine several different relationship plotlines into one whole story, and does so in a manner that feels natural.
