Ronen Divon's Articles

Don Jon (2013) ***

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's writing-directing debut, Don Jon, can be classified as a new genre: pornomedy... Though truth be told, it's not really porn but rather a sort of a commentary using porn as a, hmmm... shall we say means to an end?

Rush (2013) ***

Ron Howard is, no doubt, a capable director, and Rush, a biographical action film directed by Howard to a script by Peter Morgan, is, for the most part, an engaging movie. Yet this film, depicting the 1976 Formula One season, with the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda as its main focus, is missing a critical element - one central likable character.

The Grandmaster (2013, China) **

Directed and written by Wong Kar-wai and starring Tony Leung as Ip Man and Zhang Ziyi as Gong Er, The Grandmaster is likely to be enjoyed more by martial arts enthusiasts than the general audience.

Elysium (2013) **

Elysium is a sci-fi action-thriller written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. I am tempted to say that ultimately Elysium is all about saving a little girl with Leukemia, but even that would be an overstatement... This is one film you can skip.

2 Guns (2013) ***

Formulaic in its storyline and thus quite expected in its handful of plot twists, 2 Guns is still a lot of fun to watch. Well-paced and enjoying good chemistry between its magnetic lead roles, it serves as an explosive dish of summer fun, especially if you are up for some mindless loud action.

The Spectacular Now (2013) ***

The Spectacular Now is able to capture some elements of the coming of age experience. Its plotline is mostly satisfying with the exception of the set-to-please ending. I only wish the filmmakers would have been a little braver in their exploration of the characters and the situations presented along the road.
