Gnomeo and Juliet (2011) ***

A cute idea for a 10 minute animation short, overextends its stay into a full feature. All in all, a bearable movie for adults. The kids however, gave it very high marks – they are so easy to please.

Sullivan's Travels (1941) ****

Sullivan's Travels walks a very fine line in the changes of pace and style, yet it somehow pulls it all together, much to the credit of a crafty Preston Sturges and a charming delivery by Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake. It’s a film I enjoy revisiting once in a decade and warmly recommend.

Strongman (2011) ***

Strongman tells the story of a fairly unique character, Stanely, nicknamed Stanless Steel, who can bend a penny with his bare hands, raise a truck slightly off its back wheels, and lift a small elevator with three people inside it using only one finger.

Rebel Without a Cause (1955) ****

Revisiting this movie classic over 50 years after its original release, while the topic remains relevant, much of the backdrop had significantly became dated. Still, very few if any other films describing this topic, ever reached the iconic level earned by this film, and for a very good cause.

Another Year (2010, UK) ****

In this film Leigh explores relationships: marriage, friendship, family, coworkers. Despite comical moments and good flow, due to its subject matter, the film feels long and heavy. Mike Leigh's fans will delight, others may justifyingly yawn, and may even step out before the final depressing shot of this study linger just ahead of the final rolling titles.

The Company Men (2011) ***

There is nothing particularly wrong with The Company Men, a film addressing with a decent amount of honesty the humiliating effect job loss had on people during this recent depression; but then again, there is also nothing that great about it.
