Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) ***

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a nice summer movie that has good intentions but is unable to shake its past nor its need to follow the predictable and yawning plotline.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) ***

Here is a film that aims at satisfying both the guys, forced into watching it, as well as the women, lured by the romantic premise of the title and promos.
For the guys there is plenty of manly action with lessons about getting laid, while for the women there is the sweet promise that ultimately, true love wins.

Tabloid (2010) ***

Tabloid is a documentary that goes to show life is indeed stranger than fiction.
It tells the story of Joyce McKinney, a former Miss Wyoming who, in 1977 fell in love with a young Mormon missionary named Kirk Anderson.

Cowboys & Aliens (2011) ***

Here is a noble and seemingly original idea: confronting characters of the Wild West – Cowboys, outlaws and Indians, with aliens. Can two very specific genres work well when combined?

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) ***

In the tradition of summer blockbusters, Captain America: The First Avenger delivers the goods. It has everything a traditional comic book based film should have – an underdog hero being granted superpowers to save humanity, a good looking dame as a love object, an evil enemy (and who serve better this purpose than the Nazis, especially when led by the Hugo Weaving, the terrifying Matrix agent reincarnated,) and an ending that already calls for a sequel.

A Better Life (2011) ****

A Better Life wisely pushes its socio-political agenda to serve as the backdrop for a more humane drama. It is the story of a single, hard-working, illegal immigrant father from Mexico, living with his son in a poor neighborhood of LA.
