The Cabin in the Woods (2012) ****

This film has all the traits of an immediate classic. It is smarter for its genre, and strikes a good balance between horror, humor, parody, myth, and, yes, even little sprouts of intelligence...

Meet John Doe (1941) *****

If you have never seen Meet John Doe, a Frank Capra film, starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, you are in for a treat. This film has it all (well, almost all): witt, romance, journalism, policits, corruption (or am I repeating myself?...) and even, yes, possibly the roots for the Occupy movement...

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (UK, 2012) ***

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is an uneven British romantic comedy-drama film. While its first half is witty, funny and works like a charm, the later part takes a deep dive and never recovers.

The Hunger Games (2012) ***

A much anticipated film, I am told The Hunger Games is better read than seen on the big screen. Without reading the story, the premise of the film is questionable. Regardless, the acting in the film is terrific as is the directing and the cinematography. Once rolling, it is an engaging tale through its over 2 hours of running time.

The Million Pound Note (UK, 1954) ****

Here is a comedy that may not make you laugh out loud but will keep you grinning for 90 min, a good remedy for various ailments.

Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011) ***

An uneven indie comedy, directed and written by Jay and Mark Duplass, Jeff, Who Lives at Home is sort of a mess. It consists of funny bits and moments of charm; and then there is the rest – a sluggish plot that seems to go nowhere for the better part of the film.
