Chef (2014) ***

Chef (2014) ***

Chef is a comedy aimed to please. It is one of those deserts that while feasting on it, may satisfy your immediate craving for sweetness, but that once digested, ultimately leaves you nauseated.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) ****

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) ****

Making for a fun afternoon at the movies, X-Men: Days of Future Past is engaging and, for the most part is well-paced. It occasionally borderlines with some good philosophical points, the ones you may expect Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard to ask: can we really change the future? The classic conundrum of destiny versus choice.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) ***

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) ***

The second installment in Marvel Comics Captain America's superhero franchise is violent, wickedly silly, and very predictable. What this film lacks in plot twists and subtlety it makes plenty in engaging action scenes, well-executed special effects, and witty comic-relief lines.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) ****

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) ****

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a charming, fast-pace story, whose protagonist is a revered concierge named Monsieur Gustave H. With its white and pink decor, The Grand Budapest Hotel itself looks much like a tall fancy wedding cake, structures with layers over layers of, well, nothing of real substance, thus becoming a set metaphor for the story.

Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago (2013) ****

Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago (2013) ****

Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago, is a heartwarming documentary by Lydia Smith. It is the sort of film that moves slowly and grows on you as you get to know the various protagonists -- pilgrims on the ancient Camino de Santiago trail. Some will find answers, other peace, but all just by the mere walk would, one way or another, get transformed.

Muppets Most Wanted (2014) ***

Muppets Most Wanted (2014) ***

The Muppets sequel to the 2011 The Muppets film, is entertaining and fun, yet it surrenders too much screen time to characters other than, well, the Muppets... My kids enjoyed it while I wasn’t bored. If you are a Muppets fan and are willing to settle for less than the best, the Muppets Most Wanted makes for a pleasurable afternoon at the movies.
