Shining in a sub-genre of crime films, Affleck proves yet again he is more skillful in picking and directing projects, than some of his past choices as an actor. The Town is a thriller that is likely to keep you on the edge of your seat for most of its two-hours’ length.
This police parody is one hour too long and suffers from unevenness as well as thin plot and poor pacing. Only reason I am giving it an extra star, over the two it deserves, is because on occasion it shines with hilarious dialogues.
Emma Thompson's second installation of Nanny McPhee loses some of its original charm in favor of computerized special effects. It also suffers from several corny scenes and a totally soapy ending. The children liked it much but for me, as a fan, the results didn’t meet the expectations.
The Kids Are All Right could have been a wonderful film about a host of topics; but instead, it ends up saying almost nothing. Some parts are very convincing, humoristic, honest and touching, while other parts feel artificial and staged. The film starts and develops with a firm direction, but then stutters towards the end like a car out of gas. But most of all, there is nothing new in this otherwise to fresh of a setup.
Form without content, this film is more concerned with being inventive (which it is), original (which is it) and stylish, than with telling a compelling story, or having characters with minimal depth... The film tries to marry comics, video games, music, martial arts style fights, and a love triangle, amongst other topics, into one tasteless salad.
Ip Man 2 picks up just about where Ip Man (the first movie) left off. Here too, stereotypes damage what is otherwise an engaging film. But as with the first Ip Man movie, the film is saved by superb martial arts scenes and excellent acting on the part of Donnie Yen and the other supporting cast members.
