Coating great sadness, composed of loneliness and departure, Beginners is superbly wrapped in funny one-liners as well as other fun and original bits.
This is a good true and quite terrifying story made into a film, a film most critics feel compelled to praise, but that, in all honesty, is quite long and tiring to watch.
Poetry, a South Korean drama film, written and directed by Lee Chang-dong, is both simple and complex. Though following a clear narrative, the sum of the film’s layers adds up to a poem, as is its ending: clear yet leaving room for personal interpretation.
Barney’s Version is a mixed blessing. The film enjoys a decorated cast, including names such as Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman and Minnie Driver. It has a mostly solid storyline, yet, feels often as a long novel compacted into a tiring 132 minutes.
In this film Leigh explores relationships: marriage, friendship, family, coworkers. Despite comical moments and good flow, due to its subject matter, the film feels long and heavy. Mike Leigh's fans will delight, others may justifyingly yawn, and may even step out before the final depressing shot of this study linger just ahead of the final rolling titles.
The Way Back is an endurance story that walks the distance, until the distance gets the best of it. It ends up testing the audience’s own endurance.
