Frantz (2016, France-Germany) ****

Frantz (2016, France-Germany) ****

Franz tells the story of a German woman named Anna, beautifully portrayed by Paula Beer, who, in post-WWI Germany of 1919, while grieving Franz, her fiancé who perished in the Great War, is receiving a surprise visit by a Frenchman. The relationship between Anna, the Frenchman, the dead fiancé, as well as his parents, take center-stage. All this is happening to the backdrop of two countries still hostile, still healing from the wounds of war.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) ****

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) ****

A realistic anti-violence war film, Hacksaw Ridge is both appealing and appalling. Directed by Mel Gibson to a screenplay by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of Desmond Doss; a Seventh-day Adventist believer, who swore off violence due to his faith as well as early childhood traumas. Yet, despite Doss’ position as a conscientious objector, when his brother and others in community enlist to fight in WWII, Doss follows suit. What ensues is a fascinating tale of persistence, resilience and courage.

Eye in the Sky (2015, UK) *****

Eye in the Sky (2015, UK) *****

Eye in the Sky is a British military-political thriller, directed by Gavin Hood to a screenplay by Guy Hibbert. The film presents some very timely ethical issues related to drone warfare, as well as terrorists using civilian populated neighborhoods as a base of operation.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 (2015) ***

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 (2015) ***

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay II is the second part of the third installment in the dystopian book trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. If you have seen the earlier parts, I presume skipping the final installment is not an option. And, again, this is not a bad film. It is quite loyal to the novel. Still, something did get lost in translation.

American Sniper (2014) ***

American Sniper (2014) ***

American Sniper is a biopic war movie, directed and co-produced by Clint Eastwood to a screenplay written by Jason Hall. It tells the story of Chris Kyle who claimed 255 kills, 160 of which officially confirmed by the Department of Defense, is considered the deadliest U.S. military marksman in recorded history. He was killed at the age of 38, at a gun range, while trying to assist another veteran suffering from PTSD. Hundreds and possibly thousands of people lined up along the funeral procession to honor him.

The Imitation Game (2014) ****

The Imitation Game (2014) ****

A bio-historical war film, The Imitation Game tells the story of Alan Turin, a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and, as considered by many, the father of modern computers. Turin became famous on two accounts: being a key figure during WWII in cracking Enigma, the Nazi Germany encryption code, and, later, after the war, being criminally prosecuted for his homosexuality; a crime at the UK.
