Thrill

Unknown (2011) ***

Unknown is a well-paced thriller that manages to keep its intensity throughout its close to two hours runtime.

Black Swan (2010) ***

Though skillfully directed by Darren Aronofsky, and passionately acted by Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, and Vincent Cassel in the leading roles, Black Swan fails in creating compassion for its main character.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Sweden 2009, USA 2010) ***

Less engaging than the first film but an improvement over the second one, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, delivers several intense scenes. Exceptionally played by Noomi Rapace as the title character Lisbeth, with good supporting performances by several characters, including a late new comer to the film series Annika Hallin in the role of Lisbeth’s attorney, the 2.5 hours long film seems to aim at satisfying the audience rather than deliver deeper layers.

Catfish (2010) ****

Threading a fine line between Cinéma Vérité and Direct Cinema, this timely 'documentary' touches a much deeper theme than what it seemed to have initially intended on doing. Though uneven and heavy-handed at times, it manages to take the patient viewer, through quite a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, and for that it deserve an extra star.

The Town (2010) ****

Shining in a sub-genre of crime films, Affleck proves yet again he is more skillful in picking and directing projects, than some of his past choices as an actor. The Town is a thriller that is likely to keep you on the edge of your seat for most of its two-hours’ length.

Bourne Trilogy (Identity 2002, Supremacy 2004, Ultimatum 2007) *****

The Bourne trilogy is the perfect spy-action-suspense movie(s). The trilogy, which starts with a body in the water and ends with a body in the water, is outstanding in terms of plot, character development, pacing and editing, suspense music, cinematography, directing and superb delivery from a cast led flawlessly by Matt Damon.
