American Made (2017) ****

American Made (2017) ****

Life is stranger than fiction; this paraphrase of a Mark Twain’s famous quote may come in mind, when watching American Made. It is a film based on true events, albeit the large creative freedom the filmmakers took in its making. Directed by Doug Liman to a screenplay by Gary Spinelli, American Made tells the story of Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot who turned a drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel during the 1980s. Cutting a deal with the DEA to avoid prolong jail time, Seal ends up an informant.

Jason Bourne (2016) ***

Jason Bourne (2016) ***

I’ll state upfront that I adore the Bourne trilogy, consisting the first three Bourne films, starring Matt Damon. These embody, in my humble opinion, some of the best spy thriller films ever made. The fifth installment in this perfect trilogy, which was made into a franchise, titled simply Jason Bourne, is not bad; not bad at all. But it is also completely unnecessary. Furthermore, the plot centers around a contrived topic that replicates past themes with very little to no originality.

Bridge of Spies (2015) ****

Bridge of Spies (2015) ****

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaborate again with Bridge of Spies, a historical spy-thriller. Bridge of Spies is based on real events that took place during the height of the Cold War. It involved the 1960's U-2 Incident in which attorney James B. Donovan (Hanks), unofficially representing the US government, negotiated the release of captured U-2 spy pilot Francis Gary Powers in exchange for Rudolf Abel, a Soviet KGB operator who was arrested and convicted for spying in the USA a few years earlier.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) ***

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) ***

Is the fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible series special or otherwise groundbreaking? Absolutely not. Is it enjoyable and delivers what one can expect from this genre? Absolutely yes. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is the fifth installment in the action-spy-thriller franchise. It was co-written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, with story credits going to McQuarrie and Drew Pearce. The film stars familiar faces including who else but Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, and Alec Baldwin.

Spy (2015) ***

Spy (2015) ***

Spy by writer-director Paul Feig is an amusing parody that will make you laugh, and then laugh some more. Yet it will be all but forgotten the morning after; thus while a good comedy, Spy is not a memorable one. A fun fluffy flick for a pleasant afternoon at the movies; nothing more, nothing less.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) ***

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) ***

Kingsman is a spy-hero action-comedy, directed by Matthew Vaughn to a screenplay by Vaughn and Jane Goldman. I confess that when the Kingsman’s previews were playing at theaters, months prior to the movie’s release, I was skeptic as to seeing it. Though the coming attractions were amusing, I did not fathom I would much enjoy this production. Coming with very low expectations, Kingsman was a pleasant surprise. If you feel like tasting a summer movie regardless of the weather outside, Kingsman is a good choice.
