Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) ***

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) ***

There is nothing really wrong with The Force Awakens. It is skillfully written, perfectly directed and masterfully executed. It is entertaining and, for the most part, quite engaging. The filmmakers strove for and were successful in obtaining a balance between the familiar and the new. Yet there is also something quite tiring about this film; an element that feels a little too contrived.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 (2015) ***

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 (2015) ***

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay II is the second part of the third installment in the dystopian book trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. If you have seen the earlier parts, I presume skipping the final installment is not an option. And, again, this is not a bad film. It is quite loyal to the novel. Still, something did get lost in translation.

The Martian (2015) ****

The Martian (2015) ****

Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, The Martian is a Sci-Fi film based on Andy Weir's 2011 novel of the same title. Adapted to the screen by Drew Goddard, The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney, an astronaut specializing in Botany, who finds himself stranded on Mars, mistakenly left for dead by his fellow teammates. The plot follows Watney’s fight for survival as well as NASA’s attempts at rescuing him.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) ***

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) ***

Avengers: Age of Ultron could have been a much more interesting film if Whedon would have actually followed through on the opening theme of film: Tony Stark, ignoring his friends’ advice and listening only to his inflated ego, deciding to play the role of God. But the plot quickly turns onto the usual explosions, special effects and fighting scenes, aimed at pleasing the audience and thus increasing the popcorn consumption of the enthusiastic moviegoers. Much like the empty calories of the Diet Coke that shamelessly escorts the Silver Screen’s snacks, Avengers: Age of Ultron is quickly forgotten. Consider it a preview for typical mid-Summer entertainment.

Ex Machina (2015, UK) ****

Ex Machina (2015, UK) ****

Despite several shortcomings, all in all Ex Machina is a film worth watching. It packs in intelligence, style and questions that we should be addressing. AI is no longer a near-future possibility; with home automation and the soon-to-arrive the Google car that drives itself, that future is already here.

Interstellar (2014) **

Interstellar (2014) **

Interstellar is a Sci-Fi film directed by Christopher Nolan to a script by himself and his brother, Jonathan Nolan. It features star power including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Foy, Matt Damon and Michael Caine.
Starting with a compelling, even if not an especially novel idea, Interstellar goes at a slower than light-speed pace, from mediocre to ridiculous.
