Mr. Holmes (****) 2015

Mr. Holmes (****) 2015

Based on Mitch Cullin's 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, Mr. Holmes is not your typical crime-mystery. The film, which was directed by Bill Condon and adapted to the screen by Jeffrey Hatcher, is more of a psychological exploration of a decaying mind. Through revelations of regrets and insights, the protagonist, an aging Sherlock Holmes, can finally find his redemption.

The Age of Adaline (2015) ***

The Age of Adaline (2015) ***

Directed by Lee Toland Krieger to a screenplay by J. Mills Goodloe and Salvador Paskowitz, The Age of Adaline is a romantic drama with elements of fantasy. It stars Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford, and Ellen Burstyn.
The Age of Adaline may feel epic at times, yet ultimately it ends up saying close to nothing. While having its moments, this film is neither a science fiction flick nor a historical period piece; it has not much in terms of a great romance nor is it a commentary about time, karma and the role chance has in our lives. Thus I recommend you save yourself precious time: no need to rush see this one at the theater.

Mr. Turner (2014) ***

Mr. Turner (2014) ***

Mike Leigh latest film, Mr. Turner, which tells the story of the accomplished British painter J. M. W. Turner’s (1775–1851) later years, is a film I appreciated but did not much enjoyed. It is a British, French and German production, falling into the biopic genre. While acting, art direction, camera work and other related production roles, are superb, at a 150 minutes, the film feels an hour too long. Mr. Turner is a film about a renown painter, yet it is the person behind the name that Leigh tries to uncover. It is a film that, as a friend of mine with whom I watched Mr. Turner commented, you appreciate more after the end-credits roll than during the show.

Unbroken (2014) ***

Unbroken (2014) ***

Unbroken is a noble attempt by Angelina Jolie, who produced and directed the film, to bring to the big screen the 2010 biography by Laura Hillenbrand ‘Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.’ Not without merit, the film, whose screenplay was written by Joel and Ethan Coen, Richard LaGravenese and William Nicholson, misses the mark.
Unbroken is not a bad movie. Many film critics wrote it off as "conventional," and conventional it is, which is not what one expects from such an unconventional life-story.

Fury (2014) ***

Fury (2014) ***

Fury is a WWII war movie, written and directed by David Ayer, staring Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, Michael Peña, Jason Isaacs, and Scott Eastwood. The story takes place during April 1945, the last month of the fighting in Europe; when the Allies were already on German soil, pushing their way to Berlin. It is the tale of a battle-seasoned US Army crew of a Sherman tank named Fury. Led by a tough commander (Brad Pitt,) keen on getting his men alive through the war, the Pitt character is both a father, a friend, and a sort of God for his team. In a way he is also typical of a Sheriff in the Western genre, just displaced in time and place...

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) ****

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) ****

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a charming, fast-pace story, whose protagonist is a revered concierge named Monsieur Gustave H. With its white and pink decor, The Grand Budapest Hotel itself looks much like a tall fancy wedding cake, structures with layers over layers of, well, nothing of real substance, thus becoming a set metaphor for the story.
