Film

Moonrise Kingdom (2012) ****

If you are in the mood for a fantasy that will keep you smiling for a good portion of the film, an engaging story and a little naïve romance, you are in for a treat.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) ***

Safety Not Guaranteed directed by Colin Trevorrow to a script by Derek Connolly enjoys substance and good performances but suffers from issues of pacing and production finesse. Though playing as an independent film, maintaining its related raw production value, there is an amateurish sense to it which weakens the plot.

Hugo (2011) ****

Much like Cinema Paradiso and The Artist, Hugo is a love story for the art of filmmaking. It is also a tribute for the earlier days of movie magic, highlighting the works of Georges Méliès.

Prometheus (2012) ***

Prometheus, a Ridley Scott film, is a could-have-been that never quite delivers. It starts off with very primal intriguing questions (why are we here? who created us? for what purpose?) and then veers off into yet another Alien variation.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012) ****

Madagascar 3 enjoys a witty script by Eric Darnell and Noah Baumbach. Though some lines will completely fly over the head of the younger audience, it brings plenty of grins to the faces of their adult companionships. With that said, kids and young adults still enjoy plenty of action, laughs, and a plot that keeps in the tradition of the Madagascar franchise, possibly even improving some on its previous installment.

Where Do We Go Now? (Lebanon, 2011) ***

All in all, the plot doesn’t hold the weight of the topic at hand, and the switching between laughs to tears with an occasional musical beat are just awkward. Still, kudos for the attempt.
