Feature

The Darjeeling Limited (2007) ***

What works for this film is first and foremost its backdrop scenery of India – places, people and culture. Anderson manages to bring some of it to the screen in a convincible way and that’s a treat. But overall, despite the obvious conclusion of the brothers coming together, I was left with a “so what?!” feeling.

Date Night (2010) ***

What absolutely is going for this film, are its two lead characters: Steve Carell and Tina Fey. Not only do they give a shining and very funny performance, they also appear very credible as a real low-key, average couple, going on a date night in the Big Apple.

Back to the Future (1985) *****

A classic tale of time-travel, accompanied by a terrific production, excellent casting/acting, and well-measured directing. It stands (so far) the test of time, and as a proof, my kids, mostly 10 years old, loved it very much and are begging to see the sequel.

Across The Universe (2007) ***

A milder version of Hair, Across the Universe is not going all the way, as Hair did but rather resembles more a long music video. And as so far as music videos go, some parts are very creative while others are mediocre.

Waltz with Bashir (2008) *****

Horrifyingly honest. What I loved about this movie, unlike many other war-related films, is that it expresses no judgment, no big statements; the film itself is the statement, and one can read it in any way that is right for that viewer.

Nowhere in Africa (2001) ****

A sensitive German film about the Holocaust and WWII, told from a different angle. It tells the story of a German Jewish family that escaped to Kenya during WWII, fleeing the Nazis and ending up running a farm.
