Feature

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (UK, 2011) ****

John le Carré espionage novel, turned into a film, consists of grey agents trying to make sense of it all. Their weapons are not high-tech gadgets but rather their own intelligence, and most of their fighting is composed of psychological warfare.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) ***

What this movie lacks in intelligence and wit, it tries to make up in plenty of director’s Guy Ritchie signature slow-motion action sequences.

The Artist (France, 2011) *****

Simply delightful, The Artist rightfully deserves the highest praises for being an engaging, highly stylized, well-performed film. It intelligently pays tribute to Hollywood’s silent film era, at a time of transition to talkies.

War Horse (2011) ***

Though having plenty of strong moments, War Horse is a challenging film from a story-telling perspective. Still, it’s a noteworthy film and a good way to introduce the dreadfulness of war in more realistic terms to a younger generation, that may believe war is as pleasurable as sees in a Captain America flick.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) ****

As far as fast-pace action flicks go, the fourth installment of MI, in its current screen life, excels. And while logic or probability are not this film’s strong suit, it provide an open stage for Tom Cruise, as team leader Ethan Hunt, to present fantastic action scenes while showcasing a host of tech gadgets.

A Christmas Story (1983) ****

What makes A Christmas Story so favorable is the sort of sweetness that combines slight naughtiness with nostalgia and childhood dreams and challenges we all faced at one time or another.
