Far Western (2016, Japan, USA) ****

Far Western (2016, Japan, USA) ****

Who would have guessed that in Japan, especially post-WWII, American country music, including Bluegrass, will have not just fans, but actual talented Japanese players? Yet there it is, as documented in this well-made documentary.
Directed by James Payne, shot by David McMurry, and edited and produced by Matt Leach, Far Western had me tapping my feet to the rhythm of its music, with a smile across my face the entire length of the movie; and I am not even a country music fan!

Weiner (2016) ****

Weiner (2016) ****

In a well-balance documentary, Weiner’s filmmakers do a good job highlighting the layers of an onion called Anthony Weiner.
Weiner, the film, covers three main perspectives: Weiner the politician, his marriage, and the media blitz. Each aspect can likely be made into a full-lenght film as there is much to explore. Yet packed into one documentary, we, the audience, can watch these three panels interconnect, ultimately leading to Weiner’s demise.
Another interesting aspect of this film is how it is both amusing and sad; much like the troubled humor of laughing at a man slipping on a banana peel. We like, and may even feel for Weiner, yet his actions, interactions and what ensues are, well, funny.
As disturbing as it is, Weiner, the documentary is well worth seeing.

Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict (2015) ****

Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict (2015) ****

Ahead of her time, Peggy Guggenheim’s passion for the modern art movement, and even more so, to the artists behind it, whose beds she frequently shared, is a noteworthy tale. With names such as Samuel Beckett, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp and many others decorating her life, Peggy acted as a common thread; a beacon for the avant-garde, and, at times, practicaly a life-savor sage.

Bears (2014) *** (k: *****)

Bears (2014) *** (k: *****)

Bears is a nature documentary, directed by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey, and narrated by John C. Reilly. Soft around the edges, Bears avoids gruesome scenes that typically accompany movies about wildlife. The filmmakers manage to put together a decent narrated plot, following a family of grizzly bears – a mom and two young cubs, as they venture from their hibernation home onto an Alaskan spring, summer and fall.

Tim's Vermeer (2013) ****

Tim's Vermeer (2013) ****

Directed by Teller, the documentary Tim's Vermeer, which was produced by Penn Jillette and Farley Ziegler, follows an inventor named Tim Jenison as he attempts to unearth techniques possibly used by the 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, to produce realistic paintings. Tim, who is not short on funds, may be considered a tad obsessive. But then again, maybe that is how people with lots of money and free time on their hand are thought of. Yet, the sincerity and passion with which Tim approaches the self-imposed challenge are bound to win hearts.

Searching for Sugar Man (2012) ****

Searching for Sugar Man (2012) ****

Searching for Sugar Man is a modern Cinderella story. It is a story of a search, of a journey that changed lives forever, and that is its charm. At the heart of the search is an American named Sixto Rodriguez, a Detroit based unknown musician, whose career in the early 1970s proved to be short lived with two albums that hardly sold in the USA. Unbeknown to him, his music became very successful and much influential in South Africa. Fast forward to the 1990s, when two determined South African fans, Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, manage to track Rodriguez down, a task not made easy given Rodriguez' obscurity.
