Moana (2016) ****

Moana (2016) ****

Disney’s 56th animated feature, Moana, is a 3D computer-animated musical-adventure. It is the tale of a daughter to a Polynesian tribe chief. As the chief’s only daughter, and the one to inherit his seat, she is expected to stay put and avoid taking risks. Yet, when disaster threatens her island, she fearlessly embarks upon a journey to right a wrong done to an ancient goddess. The story follows Moana from early childhood to becoming a young woman fulfilling her destiny. Accompanying her on the journey, and not much by his own choice, is a whimsical legendary demigod named Maui.

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) *****

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) *****

Kudus to Kubo, or, more precisely, to the storytellers behind this fine piece of animation. What sets Kubo and the Two Strings apart, aside of its extraordinary animation, is its story; a tale that feels at once ancient and original. While one will find in the film’s plot familiar elements that range from King Arthur to Indiana Jones’ Raiders of the Lost Ark, the subliminal context includes concepts pertaining to Eastern philosophy, and, of course, plenty of references to the Japanese culture, whereof the fable takes place.

Inside Out (2015) *****

Inside Out (2015) *****

Pixar continues to shine! Inside Out, the latest animated film by the studio, demonstrates yet again that storytelling supersedes special effects. Originally conceived by Pete Docter, Inside Out is all about relationships and emotions, especially during times of transition; be it geographical relocation or the change from childhood into puberty. Good storytelling is the ability to tell the tale of one individual in a manner that all watching can relate. That is where Pixar proves time and again their mastery. Fortunately Pixar’s animation skills do not fall far behind, making Inside Out a pure delight.

Frozen (2013) ****

Frozen (2013) ****

Very loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, Frozen, a Walt Disney animated musical fantasy is both familiar and original. What makes Frozen work are sympathetic characters, including a twist on the Snow Queen's persona, one which gives her human motivation and thus allows us to feel her pain. Considering that in recent years animated films have been a pain to watch and that this one is energetic and fun, it well deserves the grade.

Despicable Me 2 (2013) ***

Despicable Me 2 (2013) ***

There are no great messages in Despicable Me 2, and it does fall short in originality, but you'll laugh a lot, your kids will love it, and you won’t notice how fast those 98 minutes pass.

Monsters University (2013) ****

Monsters University (2013) ****

While Monsters University may be viewed as yet another formulaic coming-of-age tale, albeit its monstrous proportions, this prequel to Monsters, Inc. plays along a finer motive than plain self-discovery. All in all Monsters University still manages to surprise and show originality. It is heartwarming, smart by fine nuances rather than wisecracks, energetic and fun.
