Quartet (UK, 2012) **

Quartet (UK, 2012) **

Quartet is tiring to watch. It is a film you want to like, enjoy and be inspired by, but despite its wonderful cast, it just drags on and on. The aging actors try a little too hard to look their age, and then some, and after one too many senile jokes and very little development in terms of plot, one is left terrified of ever wanting to retire.

Zero Dark Thirty (2012) ****

Zero Dark Thirty (2012) ****

Kathryn Bigelow teams once again with screenwriter Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) to create a captivating military-style thriller. Focusing on the American efforts to capture and kill Osama bin Laden, Bigelow and Boal make some daring decisions which anger some and please others. Expand to read full review.

Amour (2012, France) *****

Amour (2012, France) *****

Amour takes its time to painstakingly play out, in a realistic style, the last few months in the lives of an elderly couple. The setup, taking place for the bulk majority of the film inside the couple’s apartment, makes the audience feel like its peering through a candid camera into the these private painful last moments. It is not an easy film to watch.

The Impossible (2012) ****

The Impossible, a drama natural-disaster film, directed by Juan Antonio Bayona to a script by Sergio G. Sánchez, walks a fine line between authenticity and a drenched melodrama. The first two thirds of the movie are both terrifying and fantastic. Bayona and his team of special effects are able to recreate the feel of a tsunami so real that one finds himself holding to his chair.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012) ****

Do bipolars attract? Silver Linings Playbook is, in itself, a bit of a bipolar movie. Two hours long, its first 60 minutes are over the top and somewhat tiresome, while its final 60 minutes show a heart.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) ****

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is, all in all, an indulgible fun.
