Side Effects (2013) ****

Side Effects (2013) ****

Despite giving Side Effects 4-star rating, this film is a miss. It starts as an intriguing drama, addressing issues of ethics related to the use of medications, but midway through, it drops reality behind as the plot turns into a thriller. With the above said, Side Effects is still an outstanding film. It is highly engaging, wonderfully acted -- especially by its convincing two leads Jude Law and Rooney Mara.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (2011) ***

The Adventures of Tintin is a mixed bag. Technically it is stunning and innovative, however, it seems that in making The Adventures of Tintin, Spielberg allowed the animation effects to take over his better sense of humanity.

The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) ****

All in all The Lincoln Lawyer is an enjoyable film, a film that could have been much more, but despite not living to its potential, still scores high.

Inspector Bellamy (2009) ***

Chabrol created a character that has a seemingly complex life, with a brother that appears his evil alter ego, a wife he loves monogamously or maybe just have an obsession with her breasts, and a life that feel purposeless. The plot gets resolved very quickly and is quite corny.

The Thin Man (1934) ****

The original Nick and Nora. The wonderful chemistry between Powell and Loy, as well as a well-written script that allows for good balance of suspense with plenty of comical moments, make the film a charmer.

After The Thin Man (1936) ****

Second installment in the Thin Man series. See an earlier review for The Thin Man.
Love the ending quote: “And I don't need anything in the world, darling, but you... and a toothbrush.”
