Frozen (2013) ****

Frozen (2013) ****

Very loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, Frozen, a Walt Disney animated musical fantasy is both familiar and original. What makes Frozen work are sympathetic characters, including a twist on the Snow Queen's persona, one which gives her human motivation and thus allows us to feel her pain. Considering that in recent years animated films have been a pain to watch and that this one is energetic and fun, it well deserves the grade.

Despicable Me 2 (2013) ***

Despicable Me 2 (2013) ***

There are no great messages in Despicable Me 2, and it does fall short in originality, but you'll laugh a lot, your kids will love it, and you won’t notice how fast those 98 minutes pass.

Rise of the Guardians (2012) ** | K: *****

Rise of the Guardians (2012) ** | K: *****

The review of Rise of the Guardians is utterly different if coming from an adult, or from a child's perspective; if it was a really good film, that should not have been the case, but being its anything but a great movie, it is. If your kids want to see this flick, there is no harm in it. Just get it on DVD and find yourself something else better to do.

A Cat in Paris (France, 2010) ****

A Cat in Paris (France, 2010) ****

A Cat in Paris is a charming, hand-drawn, action-comedy, animated film, kids and adults will both enjoy. It focuses on a good classic story and well-developed characters.

ParaNorman (2012) ****

ParaNorman, a hybrid of animation, zombie-horror and comedy, has its heart in the right place, even if its outcast theme is nothing new.

Hugo (2011) ****

Much like Cinema Paradiso and The Artist, Hugo is a love story for the art of filmmaking. It is also a tribute for the earlier days of movie magic, highlighting the works of Georges Méliès.
