Whether you will like It's Kind of a Funny Story or not, has to do with how much you will sympathize with the main character, a 16-year-old contemplating suicide but ending up checking himself into a psychiatric hospital instead. Teenage years are challenging and one would expect plenty of sympathy, but for me the plot just didn’t make the cut nor did the characters occupying the film’s space. It felt too much like a neat collection of characters stating – hey look at me – I am a nut case, but such a cute one all the same...
Zach Galifianakis as a supporting character helps keep the film fun but all in all, there is nothing particularly funny or otherwise enlightening in this film that makes it stand out. It’s kind of an average film that does not fly high enough above the Cuckoo's nest.
