An engaging political thriller that builds steadily, The Ghost Writer carries a strong Polanski visual style as well as his sense of clear direction. It features excellent performance by Ewan McGregor as the central character – a ghost writer hired to complete the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister (played by Pierce Brosnan), who’s character alludes to Tony Blair. What makes this film work is the sense of curiosity-that-killed-the-cat which Polanski is able to bring forth through McGregor skeptical character: a seemingly disillusioned writer who knows better than to poke his nose through other people’s business yet does it all the same.
