Thin Ice, a film that was re-edited and renamed, being formally titled The Convincer, falls into the genre of scam films. It thus makes it hard to discuss without spoiling the plot. The story focuses around the character of Mickey, very convincingly played by Greg Kinnear, who is the stereotype of a con insurance salesman. The plot takes time to develop so if you decide to watch this film, be patient... Yet when it picks up, around halfway through the film, it moves quickly, placing Mickey in freefall through a chain of catastrophic events. Alan Arkin plays a supporting role and is always a pleasure to watch.
All in all the film has some issues, and given that the production company and the distributor took over the film and reedited it against the director (and co-writer) Jill Sprecher’s will, its hard to tell if they made it worst or improved on the original. At any case, if you enjoy scam films, it’s a worthy one as the ending, though putting nicely the pieces together, is unpredictable.
