We Are the Best! is a 2013 Swedish-Danish adolescence drama, written and directed by Lukas Moodysson to a screenplay adapted from the graphic novel Never Goodnight by the director’s wife Coco Moodysson. The story focuses on three pre-teen girls in 1982 Stockholm, who are outcasts to their classmates for their oddness. The trio creates a world of their own, focusing mostly on the then passé Punk music.
Though well-intended, honest and critically acclaimed, We Are the Best! is boring at best. Its 100 minutes length feel more like 2.5 hours. At the rare moments the plot actually progresses, it does so painfully slow.
The acting is good as is the feeling of authenticity. But who really wants to view broken snippets from a time most of us rather put behind?
