This film has all the traits of an immediate classic. It is smarter for its genre, and strikes a good balance between horror, humor, parody, myth, and, yes, even little sprouts of intelligence...
Though the film is primarily a horror thriller, it combines into it sci fi elements, done in a retro-futurism style i.e. seemingly technologically advanced, but at the same time using visuals from the 60’s. The plot is serious but the filmmakers, Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon, constantly remember to poke fun at the genre, especially parts they don’t like about what the genre had become (the filmmakers are quoted as stating they love to be scared but detest a trend in the genre showing kids acting stupid and also, what they dubbed as "torture porn".)
All in all, The Cabin in the Woods is a pleasure to watch, even for viewers like me who usually steer clear of horror movies. It goes to show that when a movie is well-made, the genre is less significant that the content. Kudus also to the cast who does a terrific job delivering this little dark and bloody pearl.
