Don Jon (2013) ***

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's writing-directing debut, Don Jon, can be classified as a new genre: pornomedy... Though truth be told, it's not really porn but rather a sort of a commentary using porn as a, hmmm... shall we say means to an end?
Don Jon enjoys an original start but after about 20 minutes or so deteriorates into a mostly expected plot, losing its momentum. The characters are shallow and written as stereotypes. This is not due to lack of trying on the part of the actors, led by Gordon-Levitt himself in the leading role, and aided by Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, and Tony Danza.
By my rating for Don Jon would have been 2 stars but I am giving it one extra star for effort. I do hope Joseph Gordon-Levitt continues to explore his directorial ambitions but that his next attempt in writing would produce a more developed script.
