The Spectacular Now is a coming-of-age comedy-drama directed by James Ponsoldt to a screenplay by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. It is based on a book of the same title, written by Tim Tharp.
The Spectacular Now is able to capture some elements of the coming of age experience. Its plotline is mostly satisfying with the exception of the set-to-please ending. I only wish the filmmakers would have been a little braver in their exploration of the characters and the situations presented along the road.
What made The Spectacular Now work for me is terrific acting by Shailene Woodley in a major supporting role (she is Miles Teller, the main character's second-choice girlfriend). She brings so much sincerity to her role that it makes this otherwise somewhat pretentious film, a much more honest experience. Actor Miles Teller brings to mind a young John Cusack in both appearance and attitude.
A disclaimer: The Spectacular Now left such a meek impression on me that writing a review about it only days after watching it, was challenging...
