Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) ***

In its twelfth installment for the big screen franchise, and a sequel to the excellent 2009 J. J. Abrams' Star Trek film, Star Trek Into Darkness fails in originality and inspiration. Its plot suffers from illogical black holes and clichés (bombs with visible digital countdown should be outlawed in films, as should a "manual reset switch" that can instantly fix the worst of conditions...) But what Star Trek Into Darkness lacks in the above, it makes up in fun comic dialogues and good character chemistry. Yes, for trekkies Star Trek is a serious Sci-Fi action film, not a comedy,  but in this case, the lighter moments in the film - and luckily there are plenty, are its savior.
Notable especially amongst the cast is the villain character, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch manages to give some sense of purpose to a character otherwise working in a senseless vacuum. (unless you are a true trekki and knows the whole history of the Khan character, something a film such as this should not make an assumption of, his motivation for evil is somewhat sketchy.)
All in all, Star Trek Into Darkness is engaging and fun to watch but compared to its previous chapter, it's justified being titled "into darkness".
