Trance (UK, 2013) ***

If it wasn't for Danny Boyle, a very capable film director, guiding this psycho-action-drama, Trance would have been a complete flop. But Boyle manages to summon his stylish filmmaking magic to the rescue. Trance starts well, but half way through, turns into a too confusing for its own good collage of a story, that leaves us with no sympathy for a character we are led to believe is the protagonist. As confusion grows and empathy dwindles, we are left edging for the film's conclusion, where a detailed verbal explanation helps shed clarity. When a story needs such an ending, that is usually not a good sign... Trance's main challenge is its storyline, followed by some issues of credibility. Nevertheless, the film manages to remain gripping for portions of time, providing entertainment value.
