Orwell’s 1984 meets Zorro to produce an inferior V... Based on a graphic novel, V for Vendetta should probably be named V for Vey (as in Oy Vey...). Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea and John Hurt do their best but cannot save this film. The original story was about anarchism, and the film should have followed that direction. But instead, this film is, well, a mutt that says close to nothing. It doesn’t sit well within the comics super-hero genre, nor does it make a fresh socio-political statement. For the most part, when it comes to a message, its delivered in the form of endless dialogues spoken mostly by the V character – a wrong format to deliver messages in films. Despite some nice moments, good lines, and a source that can be inspiring, this film does not rise to the occasion.
