Despicable Me (2010) **

Despicable MeThe dictionary primarily defines “funny” as: providing fun; causing amusement or laughter; amusing; comical: a funny remark; a funny person. Curiously enough, it does not mention the word ”stupid” in the context of funny. Maybe this is because stupid is not necessarily funny. Despicable Me is utterly stupid. Maybe I got spoiled after watching Pixar’s Toy Story 3 and expected more of other animation studios, or maybe it was just stupid of me to have this expectation. Despite a respectable line of voice casts, led by Steve Carell and Jason Segel who do their job well, the story is completely imbecile. I recall smiling a couple of times during the film, and I recall it as it was a rare event. However, there was a lot of laughter in the audience, mostly by children, and a little too much also by adults, which made me wonder about the intelligence of the surrounding crowd. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a fairly high mark of about 80%, and though I am usually in line with RT’s rating, on this one, I shall pass. The film promises the moon but delivers a golf ball. If you have kids and must go out, it’s an option. Otherwise, seek salvation elsewhere.
