Looper (2012) ****

LooperLooper is a Sci-Fi action film. Its more specific sub-genre is time-travel. Despite plenty of other movies Looper may bring to mind, this film stands on its own. The filmmaker takes time-old ideas, such as the temporal paradox and the grandfather paradox, and presents it in the story’s context. It is difficult to reveal more details about the plot without spoiling it.
Looper was written and directed by Rian Johnson. It stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt. With Bruce Willis as one of its main characters, I am tempted to call it Die Hard with a Future, especially since one particular scene will no doubt resonate with Die Hard Willis fans, but that is not what this film is about. It’s primary focus concerns a handful of characters and the choices they need to make when faced with difficult situations. Though most of us are unlikely to face a decision such as whether to kill a young child, knowing he will turn out to be a Hitler-like person, in real life there are still situations when we all need to choose between the least of two evils.
Kudus to Johnson and other filmmakers who are striving to bring back intelligence into filmmaking.
