Hanna is a classic case where the various film parts are greater than the story as a whole. The film starts great, building interest and tension, as a good thriller should. Saoirse Ronan as Hanna and Eric Bana as her dad’s character, together with well-handled camera work and crafty editing, create credible atmosphere. Unfortunately it’s all downhill from there. The plot fails to bring together a bloody, yet unique coming-of-age story, with a boilerplate chase and revenge element, in which the past comes to haunt the present. Cate Blanchette, a super capable actress, is being wasted in a standard wicked role of no depth. One can feel Saoirse Ronan trying to give her character the right perspective, but alas, by no fault of hers, clichés take over, rendering this film a miss. Ironically maybe is the line Hanna has a chance to repeat more than once both at the start and the end of this flick: ‘I just missed your heart’.
