War

Why We Fight (2005) ****

Inspired by Eisenhower's farewell address as President, in which he warned the nation about the military–industrial complex: a dangerous mix in which economics and non-military forces dictate whether the USA should go to war, this documentary will make you either nod your head in agreement, or discard with contempt.

War Horse (2011) ***

Though having plenty of strong moments, War Horse is a challenging film from a story-telling perspective. Still, it’s a noteworthy film and a good way to introduce the dreadfulness of war in more realistic terms to a younger generation, that may believe war is as pleasurable as sees in a Captain America flick.

Kagemusha (Japan, 1980) ****

Kagemusha is an Akira Kurosawa period piece, that is in essence an extensive character study. It tells the story of a thief that happened to perfectly resemble a fearless warlord of Japan’s 1500’s.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) ***

In the tradition of summer blockbusters, Captain America: The First Avenger delivers the goods. It has everything a traditional comic book based film should have – an underdog hero being granted superpowers to save humanity, a good looking dame as a love object, an evil enemy (and who serve better this purpose than the Nazis, especially when led by the Hugo Weaving, the terrifying Matrix agent reincarnated,) and an ending that already calls for a sequel.

The Way Back (2010) ***

The Way Back is an endurance story that walks the distance, until the distance gets the best of it. It ends up testing the audience’s own endurance.

Defiance (2008) ***

Is the Bielski partisans story one worth telling? Absolutely. Is it brought forth to the screen in a manner that does it the most justice? Doubtfully.
No doubt, filmmaker Edward Zwick had nothing but the best intentions in the manner in which he dramatized the story. Yet, it seems he felt a need to dramatically punctuate a story that is already soaked in drama. It is a classic case where less is more.
