Argo (2012) ****

It’s a good sign when you watch a film whose ending you know in advance, and still clutch to your seat feeling unsure about the outcome. Ben Affleck demonstrates yet again that his talent as a director is greater than his previous career as an actor (though he does play the lead role in Argo, and does quite well at it.)

The Master (2012) ****

The Master is unnerving at times and has a mesmerizing quality. Take note though that it is a film appreciated much more by critics and lovers of quality cinema than by the wide mainstream audience.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012) ****

If you are in the mood for a fantasy that will keep you smiling for a good portion of the film, an engaging story and a little naïve romance, you are in for a treat.

Hugo (2011) ****

Much like Cinema Paradiso and The Artist, Hugo is a love story for the art of filmmaking. It is also a tribute for the earlier days of movie magic, highlighting the works of Georges Méliès.

The Iron Lady (UK, 2011) ***

Whether one appreciates Margaret Thatcher’s regime, or looks back at it as a period filled with bad memories, surely no one would take her for a frail old lady suffering from dementia.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (UK, 2011) ****

John le Carré espionage novel, turned into a film, consists of grey agents trying to make sense of it all. Their weapons are not high-tech gadgets but rather their own intelligence, and most of their fighting is composed of psychological warfare.
