Musical

La La Land (2016) ****

La La Land (2016) ****

La La Land is a tale of two wannabes in a city of dreams, where many try, yet relatively few achieve fame. Gosling plays a rebellious musician, who dreams of opening his own club, and revive classic jazz. Stone’s character is of an aspiring actress, one of many in LA. The two meet and end up falling in love.

Moana (2016) ****

Moana (2016) ****

Disney’s 56th animated feature, Moana, is a 3D computer-animated musical-adventure. It is the tale of a daughter to a Polynesian tribe chief. As the chief’s only daughter, and the one to inherit his seat, she is expected to stay put and avoid taking risks. Yet, when disaster threatens her island, she fearlessly embarks upon a journey to right a wrong done to an ancient goddess. The story follows Moana from early childhood to becoming a young woman fulfilling her destiny. Accompanying her on the journey, and not much by his own choice, is a whimsical legendary demigod named Maui.

Into the Woods (2014) ***

Into the Woods (2014) ***

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales of "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella", "Jack and the Beanstalk", and "Rapunzel", Into the Woods is a fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall, adapted to the screen by James Lapine from his and Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award–winning Broadway musical of the same title. The story is focused on a childless couple who finds themselves cursed by a vengeful witch. In their attempt to break the evil spell, the couple gets mixed up with various characters of other fairy tales.
Whether Into the Woods suffers from a poor adaptation or issues existed already in the original stage version, the film lacks the charm of a fairy tale and the simplistic wits of the original Grimm Brothers.

Begin Again (2014) ***

Begin Again (2014) ***

Begin Again does enjoy several sincere moments, a few decent pieces of music, and an occasional laugh, but all in all, it is a disappointment. It tries too hard where flow is needed, it is overdramatic where a lighter touch is called for, and it lingers on and on where better pacing could have saved the day. Once it is not; begin again, it should.

Muppets Most Wanted (2014) ***

Muppets Most Wanted (2014) ***

The Muppets sequel to the 2011 The Muppets film, is entertaining and fun, yet it surrenders too much screen time to characters other than, well, the Muppets... My kids enjoyed it while I wasn’t bored. If you are a Muppets fan and are willing to settle for less than the best, the Muppets Most Wanted makes for a pleasurable afternoon at the movies.

Frozen (2013) ****

Frozen (2013) ****

Very loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, Frozen, a Walt Disney animated musical fantasy is both familiar and original. What makes Frozen work are sympathetic characters, including a twist on the Snow Queen's persona, one which gives her human motivation and thus allows us to feel her pain. Considering that in recent years animated films have been a pain to watch and that this one is energetic and fun, it well deserves the grade.
