The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) ****

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) ****

The third and final installment in the film trilogy The Hobbit is directed, as its previous parts, by Peter Jackson to a screenplay by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro. Here is the gist of it: if you are a J. R. R. Tolkien fan and feel that Jackson’s depiction of Middle-Earth and the various characters it inhibits are true to the source, this film is for you. It is lively, full of action, and expands in details well beyond the book, as Jackson interjected into the material appendices that Tolkien wrote as add-ons to the original story (published in the back of The Return of the King).

John Wick (2014) **

John Wick (2014) **

John Wick is an action film of the hunted turned hunter assassin genre. It is directed by Chad Stahelski to a screenplay by Derek Kolstad, and is starring Keanu Reeves. John Wick makes Tarantino’s plotlines seem sophisticated and complex, which is by no means a compliment... The cliché story serves as a shallow excuse for the Reeves character to go on a killing spree that makes no sense, not even in the pulp fiction world this film inhabits. Set for a sequel, I can only wish that this excuse for a shadow character shall not be back.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012) ***

The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012) ***

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a political drama, directed by Mira Nair, to a screenplay by William Wheeler and Rutvik Oza. It tells the story of a USA alien resident, named Changez from Pakistan. Changez, who was educated at Princeton and later finds work at a lucrative American corporation, loves the USA. He is a smart, ambitious young man, who sees a future for himself in America; that is, until 9/11. After that, everything changes.

Lucy (2014) ***

Lucy (2014) ***

Following the spirit of the film's theme, which is largely based on the ten percent brain myth, it is fair to say that Lucy uses just about 20 percent of its concept's potential. After an excellent opening, the plot quickly derails into the expected path of violence; one that counts on the audience’s inherent intelligence not surpassing the three to five percent range...

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) ***

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) ***

Here’s to the launch of a new Superhero franchise. Can you hear the cash machines ringing? Sequels, action figures, video games, you name it. If there is one thing the Marvel - Disney partnership learned how to do well, it is to guard their revenue streams using superheroes. What can I say – kudus. All in all, Guardians of the Galaxy provides for a light afternoon at the movies and serves as a typical summer blockbuster. But holding my breath for the sequel, I do not.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) ****

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) ****

Turns out that if one mixes Groundhog Day with The War of the Worlds, and throws in a bit of Alien spicing for gruesome effect, the result would be Edge of Tomorrow. Story recipes aside, Edge of Tomorrow is no masterpiece. But as far as using time-loops in a plot is concerned, none had been as effective since the days Punxsutawney Phil ruled the screen.
