Film

Clerks (1994) **

The film has some potential but the thin script is not sufficient and the acting and direction reminded me of second year film school productions.

Off The Map (2003) ****

Painted in slow long brushstrokes, assembled from a storyline that can appear jumpy at times, superbly acted, and steadily directed, Off The Map tells the story of a somewhat eccentric family that lives, as the film’s title suggests, in partial isolation from the outside world.

The Messenger (2009) ****

In Sophocles’ Antigone it is said that "No one loves the messenger who is the bearer of bad news." Oren Moverman’s film could not have expressed this better, suited to our times.

Movie Review: Zombieland (2009) ***

Movie Review: Zombieland (2009) ***

Being that the horror/gore/zombie genre was never of interest to me, how did I end up seeing Zombieland? Two reasons – the movie previews promised a comedy, and Woody Harrelson. I guess as far as Zombie movies go I can’t really rate this flick – maybe a 4-star? But I am not qualified. As a comedy I am giving it 3 stars. It’s funny but limited. It gets credit for good performances, the list of rules, poking fun at the Zombie genre, and for the non-syrupy ending.

The Hurt Locker (2008) *****

An intense and gripping film. Well put and acted. It seems to convey well what war is like when fought within civilian population - a situation not that familiar to most audiences not living in places such as Israel.
But beyond the combat situations, it’s a good depiction of human character and its psyche under conditions almost inconceivable, including the coming back home after the intensity a soldier may experience at the front.

Food Inc. (2008) ****

This documentary may be difficult and disturbing to watch, especially for vegetarians such as myself. And I thought that I already knew all there is to know about the horrors of the food industry.
